Being one of America\u2019s oldest holidays, the Columbus Day commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492. The day was first celebrated on the 300th anniversary of Columbus\u2019 voyage on October 12, 1792 when the New York Society of Tammany honored him. It did not become a federal holiday until 1937 when the heritage of an estimated 26 million Italian Americans started celebrating this holiday constituting the nation\u2019s fifth largest ethnic group. Funded by the Spanish monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, Columbus traveled with Ni\u00f1a, <\/em>the Pinta<\/em> and the Santa Maria <\/em>in order to find a sea route to China and India. However, he ended up landing in the Bahamas, thus exploring the lands of America. The holiday is celebrated in few states of America, in Puerto Rico, and few cities of Italy and Spain. <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
