PEEL N STICK Patches SKU# PATCHES_3

  • Sew-On Patches (No Backing)
The Sew-On Patches are machine embroidered patches that do not include an attached backing thus revealing the thread on the back, unlike the other styles of patches listed below. Sew-On Patches can be sewn on by both machine and by hand. Being a standard option for embroidered patches, the Sew-On Patches will remain intact through washing and wearing. They can also be unstitched, removed, and sewn onto other fabrics. Additionally, they are not as bulky as patches with backings and are mostly considered permanent.
  • Iron-On Patches (Heatseal Backing)
The Iron-On Patches with the heatseal backing allow the patches to be attached to apparels using a home iron. Depending on the strength of the adhesives, the backings will last a quality number of wash cycles or even more if the garments are turned inside out while washing. These patches lay flat on fabrics and can easily be washed and dried. To apply them on apparels, set the iron to its highest temperature and preheat the area where you wish to apply the patch. Before applying heat with the iron, sew a few stitches to hold the patch in place while ironing. Place the patch onto the apparel and cover it with a cloth to prevent burning from the iron's direct heat. Apply pressure with the iron for about 30 seconds. Repeat this action a couple more times. Then, turn the surface inside out and iron the back of the patch for another 30 seconds—this will seal the glue of the patch to the fabric. These patches have a shiny coating that melts and adheres strongly to to cotton and polyester, as opposed to nylon and synthetic.
  • Peel & Stick Patches (Adhesive Backing)
The Peel and Stick Patches are non-permanent embroidered stickers with glue applied on the back of the patch. They are covered with paper that can be peeled off for application. Their adhesive strength is good enough to be applied a few times, but will not withstand washing. The paper backing with plastic provides a firmer feel than the thread of patches. These are the most suitable patch type that can be applied to fabrics without needing to permanently attach them. To apply them, simply peel off the paper backing and press the patch firmly on the fabric. For instant branding or giveaways, the peel and stick patches serve as the ideal walking billboards.
  • Velcro Patches (Hook with/without Loop Backing)
The Velcro Patches are mostly used for military applications as morale patches the removal and reapplication of patches are frequently required. By default, our Velcro Patches are available with “One Sided Velcro” (with Hook) which is selected with the option "NO" and YES for the option of “Double Sided Velcro” (with both Hook and Loop)—please note that changes will require additional charges. Choose the One Sided Velcro option, if the uniform has a loop fastener area. If it does not have a loop fastener area, then choose the Two Sided Velcro option. For the hook and loop backing, one side can be applied to the fabric and the other side can be applied to the back of the patch. These patches are popular for their convenience of use—they can be reapplied or removed easily without causing damage to the fabric. Therefore, velcro patches are great for creating standard-shaped badges that represent career specialities.
  • How to Apply Iron-On Patches to Garments?

The Iron-On Patches with heatseal backing can be applied to your article of clothing with use of home iron. However, they melt and attach better to cotton and polyester in comparison to nylon and synthetic. Position the patch on the fabric and sew a few stitches on the edges to hold it in place before you apply iron. These patches have a thin layer of heat-activated glue plastered on the layer of plastic backing that becomes adhesive when heat is applied.

First, turn on and heat up the iron to its right temperature setting depending on the type of clothing. Be sure to preheat the iron before you attach the custom patch. Make sure to iron the area of the clothing with an even circular motion to make sure it becomes flat and smooth, because the patch will not adhere correctly if there are wrinkles. Then position the patch over the heated spot and cover it with a cloth or towel to prevent it from burning. Hold the iron with pressure for 30 seconds and move it in circular motion for a few rounds before releasing it. After that, turn the surface inside out to iron the back of the patch for 30 more seconds to seal the glue of the patch to the fabric. Maintain consistent heat and pressure throughout the heat sealing process.

Check the patch by carefully inspecting the edges, if it is properly attached, then the patch will stick to the fabric without having any ends turning up. If it does not, then cover the patch again with cloth, repeating the heating process for another 30 seconds. After this, turn over the clothing carefully and repeat the heating process again to ensure that it completely adheres to the fabric. Finally, let cool for few hours to make sure that the patch securely attaches onto the clothing. Then, wear the clothing to inspect how well the patch holds up around the edges as you move about, stretch, and perform physical activities.

  • What kind of Artwork quality should be submitted for Custom Patches?

The artwork for Custom Patches can be submitted through the easy order form or you can select the "Help with Artwork" option to scale or choose specific colors for your artwork. For optimum embroidery results, we suggest submitting high resolution files of 300dpi, within the maximum printing area of the given length and width. Please upload files that are vectorized and crisp with high resolution. The accepted file types include, PSD, InDesign, Illustrator, eps, tiff, corel, PDF, .ai and .cdr. These files can be uploaded with reference to to the additional instructions included in the comments section. Please understand that 100% color matching is not possible for embroidery. We highly suggest you provide the required PMS colors from your artworks for us to find thread colors to match your color selections to the best of our abilities. Please follow the guidelines provided here for finest stitching outcomes. We will not be liable for any issues with file formats that were directly sent to us without being sent in for proofs. We will also not be liable for final stitching that does not meet your expected quality/standard.

For creating smooth textures and beautiful gradients, we advise to limit intricate and small details on artworks as they might not show properly on actual embroidered patches. Therefore, please make sure that you use simple fonts and larger text, since small text will tend to lose their sharpness during stitching. There are physical limitations to recreating your artwork—embroidery is done by stitching threads, so keep text and designs simple to ensure that the produced patches are readable and recognizable. To make the submitted artwork look less cluttered, include large and bold texts, avoiding any hard-to-read texts, embossing, drop shadows, gradients, and complex details as they might not be legible upon stitching. Select contrasting colors to produce striking designs and accurate color representations that will complement your selected thread colors. To ensure design stitched well on the finished look, choose your preferred type of edges from two available types of designs: merrow borders and hot cut borders. If help is needed from our design team for further artwork modifications, an extra charge will be added. The charge will be for the additional artwork proofs sent in form of PDF for verification and approval from your end.

  • How will the actual patch size be produced?
The recommended maximum printing area for the custom patches depends on their length and width, which ranges from 2-10 inches. Artworks will be scaled proportionally to fit within the length and width that you select for round/oval, square/rectangular, and custom cut to shape patches. For example, if you choose 2 inches (width) x 2 inches (length) for your patch size, but the artwork is actually 4 inches (width) x 3 inches (length) in size, it means that the artwork will be proportionately scaled to fit within the selected 2 inches (width) x 2 inches (length) area. Therefore, the actual patch size will be 2 inches (width) x 1.5 inches (length), where the longest edge can be 2 inches for final embroidery. In this regard, we recommend to calculate patch sizes and select thread colors, patch colors, embroidery percentage, and border styles accordingly.

Merrow Border Patches

A Merrow border is when the thread wraps around the edge of the patch and forms what can be compared to piping. Merrow border can only be used when the patch is a standard shape such as a square, triangle, rectangle, circle, etc.
Hot Cut Border Patches

A Hot Cut border has the thread up the very edge of the patch and then the patch is cut using a hot knife. The resulting edge forms a very clean and crisp patch. Hot cut border is recommended for custom embroidered patches with iron-on backing or those patches that are cut to shape around the design.
